- Senior Lecturer in History, University of Aberdeen
I have published widely in Britain, Europe and the United States on the history of law, sex and family in later medieval Europe. I have also published on the Viking age, Scandinavian Secular Law and the history of the German Hanse. My main focus of interest is medieval canon law and its reception, medieval marriage and the history of sexuality.
In my daily work in Aberdeen I have been strongly involved in the teaching of the history of sexuality and gender relations. In addition to my senior honours courses on canon law and on marriage in the Middle Ages, I have put together courses on women (Second-year course: “The Second Sex”), the History of the Construction of Gender since 1750 (Second-year course: “Making Sex”) and on gender relations from Antiquity to the present (Second-year course: “Men, Women and In Between”). My third-year courses have concentrated on the social, legal and cultural history of marriage and family in the middle ages.
