- Adjunct professor at ETS & senior researcher at IRSST, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS)
With a joint Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Acoustics from the University of Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, Canada) and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (Lyon, France), F. Sgard has been conducting research in the field of noise control for 35 years. From 1995 to 2006, he served as a researcher and professor at the Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat, where he developed research activities in acoustics applied to the transportation and construction industries. His work focused on topics such as designing high-performance acoustic materials for sound absorption and insulation, numerical modeling of homogeneous and heterogeneous porous materials, numerical modeling of complex multilayer structures at low frequencies, and characterizing the mechanical parameters of porous materials.
In 2006, he joined the Noise and Vibration Group at the Robert Sauvé Occupational Health and Safety Research Institute (IRSST) in Montreal, Canada, first as a visiting researcher and later as the head of the Noise and Vibration research field. From 2012 to 2020, he was in charge of the research field on the prevention of mechanical and physical risks at the same institute. Since 2021, he has dedicated himself to research activities. Currently, he holds the position of senior researcher at IRSST and has been an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at École de Technologie Supérieure (Montreal, QC) and the University of Sherbrooke since 2007.
His research, applied to occupational health and safety, focuses on modeling individual hearing protectors and their comfort, modeling acoustic materials, and developing prediction and measurement tools for noise control. With more than 220 journal and conference articles, over 130 abstracts, reports, popular science articles, and two published books, one in the field of acoustics and vibrations and the other on hearing protectors, F. Sgard is a renowned expert in his field.
