Filipe Mendonça

(He/him)

Filipe Mendonça is Associate Professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), in Brazil, where he has taught since 2011. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of International Politics at City St George's, University of London, and a Fellow Researcher at the Academy of International Affairs NRW, in Bonn.

He studies U.S. trade policy, the U.S.–China rivalry, and how both reshape the options available to Latin American countries. His research traces the long history of aggressive unilateral trade instruments — from the Section 301 investigations of the 1980s to today's tariff disputes — and argues that what often looks like rupture in Washington is better understood as continuity.

He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and co-authored Poder e Comércio: A política comercial dos Estados Unidos (2018). He chairs the International Political Economy section of the Brazilian Association of International Relations (ABRI), is a researcher at INCT-INEU, and hosts Chutando a Escada, a podcast on international political economy.
