- Senior Lecturer, School of Architecture Design and Planning, University of Sydney
I am an Engineer by training. My research focuses on determining and quantifying the effect that the indoor environment has on thermal comfort, productivity, health, and well-being. My main research areas include human thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, cognitive performance, thermophysiological modelling, and the development of non-intrusive methodologies to monitor IEQ parameters. My research outcomes are mainly based on original research conducted both in the laboratory and in field studies. My research aims to develop occupant-centric solutions and tools to improve the performance of existing and new buildings.
I am the main author of several free and open-source tools:
- HeatWatch - free web app that allows people to calculate their personalised heat health risk and provide cooling recommendations
- SMA Extreme Heat Tool - free web app to predict heat stress when playing sport
- pythermalcomfort — a Python package to calculate several thermal comfort indices,
- the CBE Thermal Comfort Tool — an online tool for thermal comfort calculations and visualization,
- CBE Clima Tool — an online tool for climate data analysis and visualization, and
- Cozie application for Apple — smartwatch application for environmental quality satisfaction and physiological data collection.
I am the recipient of the USYD Horizon Fellowship and currently working as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. I am a voting member of the ASHRAE 55 Standard Committee. A globally-renowned standard for defining satisfactory thermal environments. I am also co-leading the Landscapes and the Built Environment research theme at the Heat and Health Research Center at the USYD Faculty of Medicine and Health. I am also co-leading the Climate disaster and adaptation research theme at the USYD Sydney Environmental Institute.
I received my PhD in 2017 from the University of Wollongong during which I focused on determining the impact of Indoor Environmental Quality on perceptions of occupants (staff and residents) and agitated behaviours of residents at aged care facilities.
