My work at the East African Resilience Innovation Hub feeds into what hopefully will be my final thesis- on Elasticity of Democracy in Mosaic Societies (focusing on the Eastern Africa region).
Electoral systems are a crucial part of democracy, yet often these systems are being exerted on societies that are split by deep cleavages of race, religion, language, or ethnicity- this is what we refer to as Mosaic Societies. We seek to move away from a ‘fixed’ notion of democracy to one that accommodates the dynamics at play within mosaic societies.
The main objective of research is to: Identify and interrogate different models of democracy within divided societies in Eastern Africa and evaluate their relationship with electoral conflict.
