Dr. Faith Gordon is an Associate Professor in Law, The Australian National University; Director of the Interdisciplinary Youth Justice Network; an Associate Research Fellow at the Information Law & Policy Centre, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London and a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster.
Faith’s research interests include children’s rights, media, social media, AI, digital technologies, youth justice and climate action. Faith is the author of 'Children, Young People and the Press in a Transitioning Society' (2018, Palgrave Macmillan).
Faith has co-edited several collections with Dr Daniel Newman on 'Analysing Leading Works in Law and Social Justice' (2021, Routledge) and 'Access to Justice in Rural Communities: Global Perspectives' (2022, Hart Publishing); and with Dr Emily Setty and Dr Emma Nottingham on 'Children, Young People and Online Harms: Conceptualisations, Experiences and Responses' (2024, Palgrave Macmillan).
Faith's latest book, co-authored with colleagues Dr Rumy van Ark and Professor Devyani Prabhat entitled: 'Children’s Rights, "Foreign Fighters", Counter-Terrorism: Children of Nowhere' is being published by Elgar Publishing Law in September 2024.
Faith previously worked as a Lecturer in Criminology (2016-2020) in the Department of History, Sociology and Criminology at the University of Westminster, London and the Faculty of Arts, Monash University, Melbourne (2018-2020). Prior to that Faith was a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast, where she taught in the areas of criminal justice, criminal law, evidence and research methods. Faith has also taught at Queen’s University and the University of Ulster in the areas of: criminal process; youth justice; media representations; crime and disorder; gender and the media. Faith was also a Research Fellow and Post-doctoral researcher working in the Childhood, Transition and Social Justice Initiative on the ESRC funded Knowledge Exchange Project entitled: Identifying and challenging the negative media representation of children and young people in Northern Ireland. Include Youth and the Childhood, Transition and Social Justice Initiative were lead partners on the project and their established working relationship was committed to knowledge and skills transfer between academic researchers and community-based practitioners.
Faith has also been a Research Assistant on a number of research projects including work for the Hillsborough Independent Panel; research on ageing prisoners; research on prisoner’s rights. Faith was appointed as a Trustee for Headliners UK, a youth and media charity (2015-2018). Her research on police release of children’s images has been referred to by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (2015), in the Northern Ireland High Court, the UK Court of Appeal (2019) and the Youth Court in Aotearoa - New Zealand (2021).
