Dr Faisal Hai is a Professor and the interim Head of the School of Engineering of the University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia. Professor Hai is the Director of the Strategic Water Infrastructure Lab (SWIL). A Civil Engineer turned Environmental Engineer, Professor Hai's research underpins the protection of land and water resources from contamination, and focuses on the aspects of water treatment and reuse, management of waste, and providing environmental solutions for resource and energy development projects.

Professor Hai's group works on development of climate-independent water sources and ensuring water quality, with specific focus on remediation of emerging contaminants/aspects from water (e.g., micropollutant, microplastic, PFAS, antibiotic resistance, Legionella). His recent work on microplastics generation from the plastic recycling industry has generated significant public interest and has attracted a commentary in Science (https://www.science.org/stoken/author-tokens/ST-1733/full).

Professor Hai carries out a number of research, teaching and governance leadership roles across the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS) at UOW. This includes, among others, leading the 'Environmental Engineering and Water Resources' powerhouse.
