Estelle is an Assistant Professor in Criminology in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology. She joined Sussex in 2024 after completing her ESRC funded PhD and Post-doctoral Fellowship at King's College London. Her PhD "Policing the European Arrest Warrant: An empirical study of a transnational policing tool." detailed the police role in the European Extradition system and was based on ambitious empirical research that took place across multiple jurisdictions. Estelle obtained her LLB from King's College London before studying for an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at The University of Oxford, she taught Criminology and Public Law during her time at King's College London.

In the Sociology & Criminology department at Sussex Estelle convenes the Police & Policing and The Politics of Criminalisation modules. She also teaches on Understanding the Criminal Justice System and Punishment & Penology. She supervises criminology dissertations on the BA and MA programmes. She also acts as the Employability lead for the department currently working on a whole degree approach to embedding employability in the curriculum.

Estelle's research is focused on two areas of policing and criminal justice: cross border or transnational policing and police stop and search powers.

Her primary area of research is transnational police and criminal justice cooperation, she has published work on policing extradition and a chapter exploring the role of trust in support cooperation between transnational criminal justice professionals. She was a major contributor to the Criminal Law Reform Now Network’s 2025 scoping review of the UK domestic legal framework for international cooperation, leading the Mutual Legal Assistance section of the report and contributing to the extradition aspect.

She is currently leading a British Academy small grant project with Gemma Davies (University of Durham) entitled Cross-Border Criminal Evidence Transfer in the 21st Century – An Irish Case Study. Estelle is also working on a forthcoming book project for the OUP Clarendon Studies in Criminology series entitled Policing European Extradition: Transnational policing in support of judicial cooperation.
