Eric Galm is Professor of music and chair of the music department at Trinity College. Recently he served as co-director of the Center for Caribbean Studies and as an inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Faculty Fellow. He founded the Trinity Samba Ensemble and the Samba Fest, an award-winning regional music festival that has presented the United States debut performances of several Brazilian artists. In October 2024, Galm and the Samba Fest were awarded the Judith McCulloh Public Sector Award from the Society for Ethnomusicology. Galm has conducted research, presented, and performed in Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, the United States and Canada. He was invited to serve as a featured participant at the “International Seminar on Education Research: Theory and Practice” at the Universidade Estadual de Piauí/Teresina, and “Música em Debate” at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. In September 2018, Galm was awarded Honorary Citizenship from the City of Itabira, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and several of his community collaborators received certificates of merit from the city. He has served as a selection committee member for the Fulbright Fellowship Program, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Connecticut Office of the Arts, and the Southern New England Apprenticeship Program. He has also received awards from the Fulbright Fellowship Program, Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, Trinity College (Trustee Award for Excellence and Hughes Teaching Achievement), the Steve Balcanoff Award for community engagement from the Hartford-based Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance, among others. Galm has also developed interactive presentations about music and culture for public school systems, the Connecticut State Department of Education and an online EdX world music course that has attracted over 4,700 enrollments from 143 countries or regions.
He has performed as a percussionist with internationally renowned musicians and groups including the Paul Winter Consort and Pete Seeger, performed the Maine and Michigan premieres for works by composer George Crumb, played the Boston, MA premiere productions of Once on this Island, and Schoolhouse Rock: Live, and he has recorded several CDs ranging from traditional Renaissance music to Brazilian Jazz. His publications include The Berimbau: Soul of Brazilian Music (U. Press of Mississippi 2010) and “Baianas, Malandros and Samba: Listening to Brazil Through Donald Duck’s Ears” (Global Soundtracks: Wesleyan 2008). His most recent book, Evanira Mendes, a Voice from the Brazilian Folklore Movement (2025 U. Press of Mississippi), explores the life, experiences, and writing of a young woman Brazilian folklorist in the 1950s as well as the emergence of Brazil’s first Museum of Folklore.
