Dr Emrys D. Jones’s research focuses on sociability and celebrity in the eighteenth century. His 2013 monograph, Friendship and Allegiance in Eighteenth-Century Literature, charted the relationship between the language of friendship and political discourse in works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding and others. He has co-edited essay collections on celebrity and intimacy, and on sociable spaces in the long eighteenth century; two forthcoming collections will investigate the impoliteness of periodical culture and representations of the eighteenth century within current popular culture.

Emrys is General Editor of the Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, sitting on the executive committee of the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. He enjoys teaching all aspects of eighteenth-century literature from Aphra Behn to Jane Austen. He is currently working on a monograph exploring tropes of corrupt sociability in literature and visual art across the period.
