Emmanuelle Veuillet

Emmanuelle Veuillet is a social scientist whose research focuses on South Sudan’s contemporary political economy. Her thesis presents a detailed analysis of the way in which civil wars participated in forging a new political and economic system and in more broadly redefining the positioning and expectations of different social groups. This research provides different insights into the structuring of the South Sudanese political economy, the overlap between armed conflicts and agrarian structures, the formation of armed opposition movements and the social transformations generated during periods of war, taking into account the navigations and strategies of those who are not part of the political and military elite. After her PhD, she did some research about the experiences of combatants waiting for their integration into the national and unified security apparatus, following the peace agreement signed in 2018. She is currently starting a research project about the multidimensional effects of the economic crisis in South Sudan, since 2015, asking how the crisis created over years a new system, from institutional and individual trajectories. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, at the University of Juba and affiliate PhD researcher at the Institut des Mondes Africains (IMAF) in France.
