- Professor of Greek Culture, University of Leeds
Emma's research interests lie in various aspects of Greek cultural history, especially religion, approached via a combination of literary and material evidence. She has about 30 articles in print or nearing completion on a variety of topics in Greek myth, religion and iconography.
Her commitment to communicating an interest in Classics beyond academia is demonstrated in the lavishly-illustrated Life, Myth and Art in Ancient Greece (London 2004) and Ancient Greece: the Definitive Visual History (Dorling Kindersley). Work currently in progress includes an article on classical themes in the modern musical, and a book-length study of the concept and the cult of Nemesis personified (Bloomsbury Academic).
Emma is author of Herakles (Routledge 2012) and leader of the Leeds-based Hercules Project, which has published four volumes on receptions of the hero Herakles-Hercules from the end of antiquity to the present day (https://herculesproject.leeds.ac.uk/).
