Elaine Burns

Elaine Burns is Professor of Midwifery and Head of Discipline, in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, at Western Sydney University. She has an established track record as a midwifery clinician, before commencing at Western Sydney University as a researcher and midwifery academic. Professor Burns research is focussed on breastfeeding, pre- and post-birth care, midwifery practice and education. She is listed in the Top 1% of breastfeeding researchers in the Asia/Pacific. Professor Burns is founding Chair of the Western Sydney ‘INNATE Collaborative’ and leads an annual conference - Infant Nutrition and Nurture Across the Early Years (INNATE) - to advance optimal infant and young child feeding. In the School of Nursing and Midwifery she is Research Theme Lead for the Mother Infant Family Network (MIFam). Her work is recognised nationally and internationally with a publication track record of more than 70 peer reviewed publications, multiple book chapters and more than 60 conference/seminar presentations. Elaine is passionate about improving support for women, infants and families during pregnancy, birth and the early transition to parenting.
