Facebook used to be a goldmine for news media companies. But since the tech giant changed its algorithm in 2018, news firms have drifted away from Facebook, particularly digital-native publications.
It only took a relatively small number of Twitter accounts to get hashtags #DictatorDan and #DanLiedPeopleDied trending. And “bots” weren’t really a part of the story.
Over the past decade, news media companies have been at the mercy of big tech platforms’ algorithms in delivering them readers. But with no guarantee of sustained revenue, media firms are looking elsewhere.
