Currently Director of the USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Cultures; formerly held the Ito Distinguished Chair in Japanese Buddhism at UC Berkeley and Director of Berkeley's Center for Japanese Studies. Author of "American Sutra" (Harvard University Press, 2019) on Buddhism and the WWII Japanese American internment and "The Other Side of Zen" (Princeton University Press, 2005) on Zen Buddhism in Japan. Editor of five books including "American Buddhism", "Hapa Japan" (on mixed race studies and Japan), and "Buddhism and Ecology". Founder of the Irei Project.
