Duncan McDonnell is a Professor of Politics and an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow.

His main research interests are political parties, youth wings, and populism. In May 2022, he began a 4-year ARC Future Fellowship worth just over $1 million AUD on the internationalisation of nationalist populism. Since 2017, he has been a chief investigator on teams that have held over $1.5 million AUD in funding from the Swedish Research Council and the Australian Research Council for long-term projects on youth wings in Europe, right-wing populism, and Indigenous involvement in Australian political parties.

In November 2024, he was named as the leading Australian university researcher in the field of Political Science by The Australian's 2025 Research Magazine.
