Duane Froese is an expert on the Quaternary geology and permafrost of northern Canada, where he has carried out field research in Alaska, Yukon and the Northwest Territories for the past 30 years. He has been a professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta since 2003, and held the Canada Research Chair in Northern Environmental Change from 2010 to 2020. Since 2020 he has directed the Permafrost Archives and Cryosphere Sciences Laboratory, a facility dedicated to the analysis of permafrost materials, including industrial CT scanning, multi-sensor core logging, a 1.2-km permafrost archive collection, and laboratories for geochemistry and ancient environmental DNA. His research uses these frozen archives to reconstruct past climates, ecosystems, landscapes and better understand future thaw trajectories, much of it carried out in partnership with northern communites and territorial governments.
