Dr Rhianna Garrett

(She/her)

Dr Rhianna Garrett (she/her) is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at Northumbria University. She is currently working on an international research project entitled (Self)categorisation as Resistance: The Refusal of Mixed Ethnic Categorisation, based in the department of Geography and Environmental Sciences. This project explores mixed ethnic identities across the UK, the US, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, and Singapore.

After founding her own anti-racism activism projects in sports clubs and societies at the University of Exeter, Dr Garrett gained a lot of experience navigating the predominantly boardroom to enact change. She recently completed her PhD at Loughborough University on ethnic minority career trajectories, holding expertise in how to transform white supremacist organisational spaces.

Today, she primarily focuses on dismantling oppressive organisational practices, with a key focus on mixed ethnic identities, currently sitting on the executive board of the Critical Mixed Race Studies Association as the global coordinator, volunteers with the charity People in Harmony, and runs an online social media page @rhimixedviews where she talks about the everyday mixed ethnic experience.
