Dineo Skosana is a coal mining researcher at the Society, Work and Politics Institute (SWOP). She holds a PhD in political science from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her doctorate project explored the contestations over African grave relocations in a coal-mined area in Tweefontein, Mpumalanga province (South Africa). The contestations are located within two legal frameworks, namely: the National Heritage Resource Act (1999) which protects graves; and the South African Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (2002), which leases minerals and consequently land, for mining purposes. She has a research interest in indigenous politics, the institution of traditional leadership, as well as the politics of land, heritage, and belonging.
