Declan is an environmental anthropologist with regional expertise in Eastern Africa. Declan's research looks at vernacular infrastructures of repair, construction and waste management. He is proud of the applied nature of his work and enjoys collaborating with industry and government in the countries where he conducts research and globally.

Declan was awarded his PhD in International Development from the University of Edinburgh in 2020. He has since held research positions at Durham and Manchester universities. His first book, "The Repair Mindset: How to fix off-grid solar in Kenya", will be published by Bristol University Press in April 2026.
