Deborah Lewer

(She/her)

I studied first for a Diploma in Art Foundation from what was then Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education. After a year learning German in Germany I then studied for a BA in History of Art at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1992. After another year in Germany, in 1993 I began work as a Research Assistant, part-time Lecturer and funded PhD scholar at Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 1999 with a thesis on Dada in Zurich. I lectured part-time at the University of Manchester, and University of East Anglia before gaining a temporary post at University College London, then another at Christie's Education, London. I spent a year in Cologne, Germany before taking up my current role as an art historian at the University of Glasgow in 2001. In 2009-10 I won a Senior Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship hosted by the University of Bonn, Germany. I have also lived in Berlin and Zurich. I specialise in the history of Dada and the wider avant-garde, and in the art and cultural politics of 20th-century Germany. My more recent research explores the intersection between progressive art and theology. I work widely with institutions outside academia and regularly lead workshops, retreats and CPD events on art of all eras and areas. I sit on a number of journal editorial boards and am a published translator (German to English), an occasional maker of podcasts, and a painter.
