- Associate Professor at the School of Communications and Co-director at the DCU Institute for Climate and Society, Dublin City University
I worked for 25 years in national print and broadcast media in Ireland before getting involved in environmental policy. I subsequently worked as an advisor to the Irish Minister for the Environment. I brought these twin interests in media and the environmental together in my PhD research which looked at coverage of climate change in the Irish media over a 10-year period. Since then, my research has focused on media representations of climate change and other environmental issues. I've also worked with media organisations in Ireland to strengthen and deepen their climate coverage, and have delivered a range of training courses related to climate communications and engagement. I was the founding director (and am now co-director) of the DCU Institute for Climate and Society, a research institute focused on responses from the social sciences and humanities to the climate and biodiversity crises. I still work occasionally as a journalist, contributing op-ed articles on climate issues. I am the course director of the MA in Journalism at DCU and consider my work in educating new generations of journalists as one of the most important contributions I can make.
