David Anderson completed a PhD in molecular virology (University of Melbourne and Burnet Institute) in 1988, and has worked at the Burnet Institute as a full-time research scientist since that time, with a strong focus on translational research (vaccines and diagnostics). This has included the development of licensed diagnostic products for hepatitis E virus infection, sold worldwide, and prototype tests for diagnosis of active syphilis infection undergoing further clinical trials. He is currently Deputy Director of the Burnet Institute, with primary responsibility for facilitating translational research across the Institute and leadership of the Business Development Office.
