Darrin Durant is an Associate Professor of Science and Technology Studies, in the History and Philosophy of Science unit of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, at the University of Melbourne. Darrin has a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Toronto in Canada, having moved overseas after completing an Undergraduate degree in Science and Technology Studies at the University of Wollongong. Darrin worked from 2005 to 2013 at York University, also in Toronto, Canada, before moving back home in early 2014 to take up his current position at the University of Melbourne.
Darrin has several main areas of research. The most general is on the tension between expertise and liberal democracy, with Darrin's interests turning on how public deliberation and institutional decision-making can make use of both lay public and expert input without alienating either. Historically Darrin's work focuses on the technical and policy challenges involved with public acceptance of nuclear waste disposal plans, on whether nuclear power is a wise energy option, and on the relations between climate politics, renewables development, and practices of disinformation.
