Daniel Commandeur

I am an award-winning researcher in sustainable energy materials with a track record of innovation, leadership, and collaboration. During my PhD, I authored six first-author papers and developed a method to eliminate costly hole transport materials in perovskite photovoltaics, earning the inaugural Latitude Prize for Sustainable Development. Currently, as a Surrey Future Fellow, I lead pioneering work in battery technology, including the discovery of a low-cost catalyst for lithium-CO₂ batteries and new materials for desalination. I was recently awarded beam time at Diamond Light Source as principal investigator.

My passion for mentorship is central to my career—supervising over a dozen students, resulting in multiple publications and PhD pursuits. At the University of Surrey, I champion a supportive research culture as a mental health first aider and EDI advocate, also serving as the school’s early-career researcher representative.

I founded the Surrey Electrochemistry Network to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, leading to new EPSRC applications. My industry experience includes advancing supercapacitor energy density with Superdielectrics, contributing to the 2024 launch of their Faraday 1 prototype.

A skilled communicator, I was a STEM for Britain finalist, presenting in Parliament and earning second place for the Dyson Prize. I am committed to research that improves lives and empowers diverse communities.
