My research examines the precursors to governance, or the political and economic processes that contribute to success or failure in environmental management. I am the author of two books with MIT Press: "Responsive Governance" and "Beyond the Tragedy in Global Fisheries". I have also published multiple peer reviewed articles and book chapters on environmental issues including marine and terrestrial mining, plastic pollution, fisheries, and water quality. I currently serve as editor of the journal Global Environmental Politics and was a founder of the Ocean Taskforce of the Earth Systems Governance Project in 2017.
