Professor Nitschke is a forest and landscape ecologist who works predominantly in forest landscapes. He is interested in the interactions between ecological processes, climate variability and change and management on the conservation of biodiversity, provision of ecosystem services, and on the sustainable livelihoods of resource dependent communities. He uses multiple approaches to address his research questions including: field and laboratory studies, ecological modelling, remote sensing, and structured and semi-structured interviews and surveys.
