I am a historian of early modern Europe, with a focus on crime and violence in sixteenth and seventeenth century Italy. I use GIS methods to understand the spatial nature of social organization, community politics and local histories. In short, location matters, and through projects such as the Digitally Encoded Census Information and Mapping Archive, in which I mapped out the residences and workshops of sixteenth-century Florence, I show how early modern Italians paid deep attention to questions of place and space in their daily lives.
