Claudia Sandberg

(she/her)

A film historian by training, Claudia's research is concerned with migration and marginality in film, cultural-political dynamics between Europe and the Global South, and relations of socialist and Third cinemas.

Sandberg is the author of Peter Lilienthal. A Cinema of Exile and Resistance (2021). She co-edited the volumes Contemporary Latin American Cinema. Resisting Neoliberalism? (2018) and The German Cinema Book (2nd edition, 2020). Together with Argentine filmmaker Alejandro Areal Vélez she made Hidden Films. A Journey From Exile to Memory (2016), a documentary that examines the value of DEFA Chile films as audio-visual memory of the Pinochet dictatorship.

She also explores how technology links to film art, focussing on ethical issues aligned to scientific progress and how films from different historical eras and cultural contexts present technology. How do engineering projects link to ideological motivations and political powers and contribute to dynamics of inclusion and exclusion?

Claudia is the coordinator of the annual Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology Film Festival at Uni Melbourne. It is an event that celebrates intersections between cinema, engineering and technology. The event offers film screenings, focused Q&As and talks with students, academics, and guests.
