Christiane Horwood

I am a UK trained family physician and have been working in South Africa for over 25 years. I have an MPH and a PhD in Paediatrics and Child Health from UKZN. I am a senior researcher with extensive research experience in the field of maternal and child health and nutrition. In particular, my research focus in recent years has been on health systems strengthening, skills development, community health and implementation research. In addition, I am the South African lead on a project setting up a masters and PhD programme in nutritional epidemiology in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Tanzania.
I have been the principal investigator for a number of large programme evaluations and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including for newborn care, community based MCH care, breastfeeding support and Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI).
All projects have been conducted in partnership with the Department of Health at provincial and national level, and I have long-standing partnerships with both WHO and UNICEF. I have published over 70 peer-reviewed publications.
I have experience in teaching and supervising Masters and PhD students.
