After 23 years at Sheffield Hallam University, Dr Chi-Yun Shin is starting a new position as a Lecturer in Film and Media at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh in January 2026. In terms of research, she has co-edited New Korean Cinema (Edinburgh University Press, 2005) – one of the first English-language publications on Korean Cinema – and East Asian Film Noir (Bloomsbury, 2015). She has also published a range of journal articles and book chapters on East Asian cinema and Black British Diaspora films, the latter of which was the topic of her PhD thesis (University of Exeter). She was the recipient of the Korea Foundation Fellowship for Field Research for her work on the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival in 2019. She also organised the South Korean Women’s Cinema conference (23-25 September 2021), funded by the Academy of Korean Studies. As a recognised authority in Korean film studies, she has delivered a number of papers and presentations at significant conferences and external events both in the UK and overseas, including at the Norwegian Federation of Film Societies in 2022. Her interview with the leading Korean female director Yim Soon-Rye was published as a chapter in the Routledge Companion to Asian Cinemas (2024), and the collection received the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema’s 1st Aruna Vasudev Award for best book on Asian cinema.
