My research interests are primarily in the distributions of biodiversity, and how they are affected by human disturbance, particularly fragmentation and habitat modification. Nowadays, this mostly involves drawing on data contributed by thousands of scientists collected over hundreds of years. However, in my earlier days I was one of those scientists, carrying out research in tropical forests around the world, including the Brazilian Amazon, Borneo, Madagascar and the Comoros Islands, although I no longer get to do as much as I would like.
