Charles-Antoine Darveau

Charles Darveau is a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa, where he has been since 2006. His work in ecological and evolutionary physiology centres on energy metabolism in flying insects. He studies the determinants of variation in metabolic rate within and across species, from the scaling of flight properties to the effects of environmental conditions such as temperature. He also investigates the flip side of the energetics coin, focusing on cellular metabolic properties connected to whole-animal energetics. His interests, stemming from his PhD training with Peter Hochachka and Raul Suarez, led him to explore fundamental aspects of animal energetics, which he applies in ecological and evolutionary contexts. His central laboratory model, bumblebees, also addresses questions specific to the biology of these fascinating pollinators. He has been involved in scientific societies and conference organizations in comparative physiology. His research, teaching and training in animal energetics continue to investigate both the mechanistic basis and ecological consequences of insect metabolic diversity.
