(she/her)

I am interested in the schooling experiences of children in poverty in the UK, and have explored the material, cultural, social and mobility 'binds' that prevent children from achieving in school. My Educational Binds of Poverty: The Lives of School Children book was shortlisted for the BBC Radio 4 British Sociological Association Ethnography Awards 2015. More recently, my work has considered what are the risks to Early School Leaving and becoming NEET and how they can be supported by schools, the state and other social actors. I am particularly interested in the role of school in promoting children's wellbeing and have led a research programme that has culimnated in an child-centred approach to wellbeing promotion through schools role to strengthen and affirm students sense of belonging and connection across the different domains of their lives (see connectedbelonging.co.uk). This approach takes a relational and identity based perspective in considering the spatial dimension of educational exclusion.
