Cédric M. John

Professor Cédric M. John is the Head of Data Science for the Environment and Sustainability at the Digital Environments Research Institute (DERI), Queen Mary University of London. His academic career includes positions at Imperial College London, where he advanced from Lecturer to Reader, specializing in Carbonate Systems and later Earth-Centric AI. Prior to moving to the UK, Professor John served as an Expedition Project Manager at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, Texas A&M University, and obtained a PhD from Potsdam University in Germany.

Professor John’s research interests are at the forefront of digital environmental science and climate studies, focusing on the application of machine learning and deep learning techniques to a variety of environmental datasets. His work is characterized by innovative approaches to automatic facies classification in digital rocks, generative AI for reconstructing core images, and deep learning applied to seismic data for automatic sequence stratigraphy. He has also contributed significantly to the development of methods for the automatic identification of bleaching events in coral reefs using satellite monitoring and unsupervised machine learning, as well as hyper-spectral mineral identification on Mars. Additionally, he has led the creation of 'Easotope,' a community software that simplifies analytical corrections and reduces errors in clumped isotope data analysis.

These advancements have been supported by substantial funding from both research councils and industry partners. Throughout his career, Professor John has been the principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous high-value projects, including the CARAPACE project funded by NERC with nearly £1 million.
