Catherine is Professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University in Melbourne. She was an Australian Research Council Early Career Research Fellow and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Singapore Management University. Her work covers migration, transnationalism and diasporas, particularly transient migration in Australia and Singapore with special interests in international students, their wellbeing, their social networks and their media and communication use. In addition, Catherine has written on identity, gender, ethnicity and race in Chinese cinemas. Catherine is founding editor of Transitions: Journal of Transient Migration (Intellect Books) and editor of the Migration, Culture and Communication in Migrant Societies book series (Routledge). Her books include: Understanding Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Migrants: Practical Approaches and Effective Research Methodologies (Springer, 2026); International Student Visibility: Living and Participating in Community (Routledge, 2024); Parallel Societies of International Students: Connections, Disconnections and a Global Pandemic (Routledge, 2022); Digital Experiences of International Students: Challenging Assumptions and Rethinking Engagement (Routledge, 2021); Religion, Hypermobility and Digital Media in Global Asia: Faith, Flows and Fellowship (Amsterdam University Press, 2021). Catherine is the recipient of the Shinning Star Achievement in Research in the A. Noam Chomsky Global Connection Awards. Catherine also teaches Asian Studies and Communication Studies at RMIT University.
