Catherine A. Coleman, Ph.D. is Professor and department chair in the Department of Strategic Communication in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at Texas Christian University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Coleman’s research examines marketing, advertising, and well-being, with particular focus on ethics and vulnerabilities in advertising, media, and consumer culture, gender representation, and transformative research. Her work is found in a range of top journals and in various edited books. Dr. Coleman’s recent co-authored publication (2023) was a finalist for Best Paper Award in the Journal of Advertising and won the American Marketing Association's Marketing and Communication Special Interest Group “Innovations in Marketing Communication” award. Dr. Coleman’s research, much of which bridges connections between industry professionals and academics, also informs her work in the classroom, where she teaches a range of advertising and strategic communication courses, including advertising, strategic communication ethics, new media, advertising & the consumer, and the history of advertising and strategic communication. She is a recipient of Texas Christian University's Deans' Award for Research and Creativity (2018) and was a nominee for the Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Achievement as a Teacher and Scholar (2020).
Dr. Coleman has served on the Education Advisory Board for the ANA’s SeeHer initiative and co-developed, with the Advertising Educational Foundation (AEF) and Association of National Advertisers (ANA) SeeHer initiative and a team of advertising scholars, the SeeHer Education Certificate. Dr. Coleman serves on the board of The Cause Agency, a non-profit strategic communication agency serving other non-profits.
In addition to her research and teaching, Dr. Coleman serves as a consultant on branding and storytelling strategies, identities and representation in advertising, and consumer well-being advancement.
