- Professor of Urbanism and Disaster Risk Reduction, UCL
I am a professor of Urbanism and Disaster Risk Reduction at The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London. I am from Canada. My PhD looked at the reconstruction after the 1999 earthquakes in Turkey. My research and teaching focuses on how cities and communities can prepare for disasters like floods, earthquakes, windstorms, tsunami, and fire, with a focus on low and middle income countries and informal settlements. I also look at the kinds of small-scale disasters and everyday risks that affect people in cities that lack basic infrastructure, like heat, water logging, violence, water borne diseases and accidents. I am interested in the roles of local governments, community-based organisations and of policy implementation on Disaster risk reduction I have worked in Turkey, India, Thailand, Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi.
