Cassandre Burnier

Cassandre Burnier is a lecturer at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), UCLouvain (Belgium), and Sciences Po Lille (France). She holds a PhD in Information and Communication from ULB (2024), conducted in co-supervision with the University of Montreal (Canada).
Her research explores the "mechanics of data" within the media industry. Through long-term ethnographic fieldwork, she analyzes how recommendation algorithms, audience metrics and automation reconfigure editorial power and identity dynamics.
Prior to her academic career, she worked as a professional journalist for seven years in regional media across Belgium and France. She leverages this dual perspective to bridge the gap between communication theory and the lived realities of newsrooms. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Communication, Communication & Organisation, and Communication & Management.
