Carolyn Laubender

Carolyn Laubender is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex. Her works sits at the intersection of psychoanalytic theory and history, gender and sexuality studies, and political theory. Her first book, The Political Clinic: Psychoanalysis and Social Change in the 20th Century, was published with Columbia University Press in 2024 and has won a number of professional recognitions, including: the 2025 Book Prize of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the 2025 Book Award of the British Psychological Society, and the Shortlist for the Gradiva Award. Her forthcoming book is a commissioned new edition of Oxford University Press's Very Short Introduction to Sigmund Freud, which will be released early next year. She also serves as the Assistant Editor and Book Reviews Editor for Psychoanalysis & History.
