Caroline Starkey

Dr Caroline Starkey is Associate Professor of Religion and Society in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds, UK. Caroline’s research focuses on minority and alternative religion in Britain. Many of her publications have given sociological attention to the establishment, adaptation and development of Buddhism in Britain, one recent publication focused on the relationship between secular mindfulness and Buddhist groups in Britain. For the last two years, she has been researching both institutional and non-institutionally-affiliated spiritualism in Britain, initially exploring the experiences of those who attend pub psychic nights (funded by the INSBS). She is currently writing a book about the resilience of spirit communication practices in post-Industrial Britain.
