Carly's research group are focused on improving the use of scientific information in environmental decisions and international policy through a range of applied research questions and by developing decision-support tools. Her current research interests include:

* exploring approaches to protecting biodiversity outside of formal protected areas
* supporting efforts to increase protected lands and waters and improve the management of existing conservation areas
* using tools for evidence-based conservation, such as rapid evidence assessment to support management decision
* developing triggers for management action to guide decisions about when to intervene in managed ecosystems
* setting condition thresholds to inform ecological monitoring
