- Senior lecturer in Zoology, University of Pretoria
I am a molecular ecologist and conservation geneticist with a diverse research portfolio focused on understanding genetic diversity, population structure, and ecological interactions in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. My work integrates molecular tools, such as DNA sequencing, DNA barcoding and microsatellite analysis to address pressing questions in conservation biology, fisheries management, and ecosystem health.
My key research interests include:
Conservation genetics and population structure where I have extensively studied the genetic consequences of overfishing and anthropogenic disturbances on marine and freshwater species, such as the southern African endemic seabream (Polysteganus undulosus) and the riverbream (Acanthopagrus vagus).
Diet composition and ecological interactions using advanced molecular techniques like DNA metabarcoding, I explore the diet composition of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), revealing novel insights into their opportunistic feeding behaviour. This research underscores the adaptability of predators in dynamic ecosystems and contributes to understanding trophic interactions.
Molecular techniques and methodological development where a significant aspect of my research involves refining molecular methodologies, such as optimising DNA extraction protocols and using RAD sequencing for phylogeographic studies. These advancements enhance the resolution and accuracy of genetic analyses in ecological research.
My research bridges molecular ecology and conservation, providing actionable insights for biodiversity preservation, sustainable resource management, and ecosystem restoration. I am committed to methodological rigour and addressing real-world conservation challenges.
