- Research Fellow/Lecturer (Adj) | AI/ML Research | Epidemiology & Population Health, Australian National University
Busayo Israel Ajuwon has a background in microbiology and completed his PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University. His research focuses on applying machine learning and other AI methods to address fundamental population health problems, with significant experience in infectious disease epidemiology and evidence synthesis for clinical practice and policymaking.
His doctoral work led to the development of HepB LiveTest, a machine-learning tool for early detection of hepatitis B virus infection, with potential to transform clinical decision-making and improve outcomes in underserved populations.
Following his PhD, Busayo held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, where he co-led the validation and clinical implementation of AI algorithms for population-based breast cancer screening. This work analysed over 3 million screening records across diverse population risk profiles to optimise early detection and improve equity and effectiveness in cancer screening.
Busayo also has experience in immunisation and health system strengthening, including co-investigating a global systematic review on polio vaccination campaigns. He recently contributed to updating the National Dementia Clinical Practice Guidelines as part of the evidence review team at the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (Peninsula Health/Monash University).
His research sits at the interface of machine learning and population health, with a focus on translating data-driven insights into AI/ML innovations that improve health outcomes.
