- Professor of Public Policy, University of Virginia
Professor Brian N. Williams, PhD, is professor of public policy at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, after previous faculty appointments at Florida State University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Georgia. His research centers on issues related to demographic diversity, local law enforcement, and public governance, with special attention devoted to the co-production of public safety and public order, inclusive of how the experiences and perceptions of individuals affect the formation and functioning of working partnerships between local law enforcement and community residents.
Prof. Williams is the Founder and Director of the Public Engagement in Governance Looking, Listening & Learning Laboratory (PEGLLLLab), a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, a member of the Board of Directors for the H. George Frederickson Center for Social Equity, a faculty affiliate of Improving Police-Adolescent Relationships Through Training (IMPART) Collaborative, served on the Criminal Justice Section Executive Board for the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA), and was one of the inaugural Co-Editors-in Chief of the Journal of Social Equity and Public Administration (JSEPA).
Prof. Williams is the author of Citizen Perspectives on Community Policing: A Case Study in Athens, GA, (SUNY Press), and a co-author of Race, Policing & Public Governance: On the Other Side of Now, published by Cambridge University Press Element’s Series. He is working with others on another co-authored Cambridge Element - Street-Level Bureaucracy in Turbulent Times: The Case of Contemporary Policing.
He is devoted to utilizing systems and human-centered design thinking as frameworks that leverage the co-creative aspects of public engagement for reconciling differences in communities, particularly for reimagining, redesigning, realigning, and reforming policies, practices, structures, and systems that resolve conflict, reduce violence, improve police-community relations, co-produce public safety, and enhance personal, professional, and communal wellness and wellbeing.
