Brett R. Chloupek

I am a broadly trained cultural geographer specializing in the historical and political geography of Central and Eastern Europe. I was promoted to Professor of Geography in 2025. My research focuses mainly on the areas of toponymics and monument studies, both elements of what is more broadly described as the symbolic landscape. My recent projects have explored the transformations of the symbolic landscape of the post-communist central and eastern Europe. Studies have included place name changes across Slovakia, especially those which erase the memories of the communist era and Soviet domination as the country seeks to ground a modern national identity. I also study important monuments which have become containers of memory for modern Slovak and Hungarian nationalisms, like the Slovak National Uprising Museum complex, or the Monument of National Unity and other Trianon memorials in Hungary.
