Brendon J. Cannon

Dr. Brendon J. Cannon is a specialist in international security, geopolitics, and emerging technologies, with particular expertise in the Indo-Pacific, the international structure of power, and the security of critical infrastructure such as undersea communication cables. He is currently Associate Professor of International Security at Khalifa University of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi), where he leads policy-relevant, externally funded research and contributes to international Track 1.5 and practitioner engagement. Prior to joining Khalifa University, he held academic positions in Nairobi and Hargeisa.

His scholarship spans peer-reviewed outlets including International Affairs, Geopolitics, Global Policy, The Pacific Review, Third World Quarterly, and Asian Security, and he is the co-editor of Indo-Pacific Strategies (Routledge, 2022) and Conflict and Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific (Routledge, 2020). He also publishes widely in policy forums and has presented his work to leading institutions and international audiences across North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Dr. Cannon earned his PhD in Political Science from the University of Utah (2009) and holds additional affiliations with international research and policy networks, including the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Institute of Security and Development Policy in Stockholm, and the Global Infrastructure Foundation Research Fund Japan.
