- Coordinator of Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, University of Connecticut
My background as an exercise physiologist and becoming an exercise specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine, and working in all phases of cardiac rehab were beneficial in learning about the benefits of exercise and nutrition. Subsequently, after becoming a physician assistant and working in cardiology, I started the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at the University of Connecticut Health to focus on individual lifestyle's as medication to reduce cardiovascular risk. We have been able to educate patients and help them make significant lifestyle changes by focusing on the cause of their co-morbidities, which includes nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, and mental status.
Lifestyle medicine is scientifically based and empowering for patients. As patients learn how they can get food to work for them with primarily a plant based whole food diet, customizing their exercise/activity for what they want to achieve, as well as understanding mindfulness to assist in decreasing stress and gaining purpose. By focusing on the cause of the underlying disease and educating our patients, they are able to make the changes necessary to prevent/treat their risk factors.
