I am currently a Visiting Scholar at the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka. I have worked as an economist from 2009, first at the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi.From 2020 to 2024 I was a Commissioner of the New Zealand Productivity Commission Te Kōmihana Whai Hua o Aotearoa. Before 2009 I worked as a city bus driver for five years, as a computer programmer and then in various positions in information technology and teaching and learning at the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University. I have been a Commissioner of the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua, a member of the Independent Taskforce for Workplace Health and Safety 2012-13, a member of the Tax Working Group 2018-19, and a member of a number of advisory committees of Statistics New Zealand. My research interests and publications include labour, income distribution, social support, productivity, overseas investment, international trade and media ownership.
