I am a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the Univ of Illinois at Chicago's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and currently a Fellow at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Study in Germany. I am the author of Where the Millennials Will Take Us: A New Generation Wrestles with the Gender Structure (2018, Oxford). I am the immediate Past Editor of Gender & Society. I also serve on the Board of the Council n Contemporary Families, www.contemporaryfamilies.org, a non-profit whose goal is to bring research to public conversation. I have served as Vice-President of the American Sociological Association and t President of the Southern Sociological Society and Sociologists for Women in Society. I am also the co-editor (with Virginia Rutter and Kristi Williams) of a textbook Families as They Really Are (Norton, 2015, 2nd edition). My research interests focus on the gender structure, in families, intimate relationships, and across generations. My current research focuses on non-binary people, those who reject the identity of woman or man. .
